Your money after a limit or a closure
A ceiling does not touch money. A closure changes when money moves, not whether it is yours. The parts of a balance that are genuinely exposed are narrow, and they are almost always the bonus layer.
A balance is layers, not a number
Players see one figure. The terms see at least four, and which layer a pound is in decides whether it is exposed.
Deposit
Money you paid in, that has not been staked away. It is returned on closure once verification is complete; a term claiming a deposit outright is the kind of term consumer-fairness rules are aimed at.
Ordinary-play winnings
Profit from staking that had nothing to do with an offer. Normally payable; a restraint clause is rarely worded to reach this.
Bonus and its winnings
The layer with a condition attached. Where wagering is unmet, or where the “spirit of the offer” clause is invoked, this is what is withdrawn.
Open bets
Positions not yet settled. They are not part of the balance until they settle, and their prices are not repriced because an account was closed.
Consequences worth spelling out: a restricted account is not a frozen account, so the money can be withdrawn; a closed account’s balance is not forfeited merely because the account is closed; and an open bet is not voided merely because the account holding it was.
A worked closure
An account is closed with £620 held: £300 deposited, a £50 bonus with 88% of its wagering complete, £320 of winnings of which £50 is traceable to a promotional market. Two questions decide how much arrives at the bank.
bonus £50 · wagering 88% incomplete → withdrawn under the offer terms
bonus-derived winnings £50 → withdrawn where the abuse clause reaches them
ordinary-play winnings £270 → payable
payable in this example: £570 · contested: £50 — and the whole £620 only where a blanket clause is read broadly, which is precisely the reading an appeal tests
The arithmetic is simple; the wording is not. This is why the same £620 produces a £50 dispute under one operator’s terms and a dispute over the entire balance under another’s — see the clause page for the three wordings that decide it.
Open bets when an account closes
| Position | Normal treatment | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Settled, already paid | Final. A later closure does not revisit a settled bet. | A re-grade window that is still open on a market rule. |
| Open, not settled | Settles normally at the price struck; proceeds join the balance. | Markets voided under a market rule — a void returns the stake but does not preserve the position. |
| Cash-out taken | Already a completed trade; settlement is closed. | Nothing. Accepted offers are not reopened by a later account decision. |
| Bonus-funded stake, open | Settles, but proceeds land in the bonus layer. | Whether the bonus layer is withdrawn once the account closes. |
The order to do things in
- Stop staking into the cap
Topping up a restricted account does not restore the ceiling and does extend the record used to score it. The position is what it is.
- Complete any request already open
An unresolved verification or source-of-funds request is what turns a payable balance into a held one. It is satisfied with documents, not with an argument.
- Withdraw rather than re-deposit
The exposed layer is the bonus. Adding a deposit does not protect it and does enlarge the amount that could be contested.
- Let open bets settle
Positions settle at their struck prices. Nothing about a closure improves by voiding them early.
- Keep the record
Account statement, the closure message and any clause relied on. If the withheld amount is real money, that is the file.
What this page will not tell you
Nothing here explains how to structure staking so a ceiling does not apply, how to move money to another person, or how to hold more than one account. Each of those is a term breach in its own right, and each turns a narrow exposure — the bonus layer — into an argument about the entire balance. The page explains which layer of your own money is actually at risk, and stops there.
Exposure is what you control. The commercial link on this page is disclosed and marked as sponsored, like every other link on the site.
